Crisis-response as substitution.

The crisis-line apparatus is the nakedest instance of this Edition's own thesis, which makes it the ideal worked example inside the decoder. The need: durable, embedded connection — people who know you and would notice. What's supplied: a scalable, anonymous, reportable contact point. The substitution: the anonymous line stands in for the connective tissue, and the existence of the line becomes a thing the system can point to — a funded, countable metric — while the conditions that actually buffer isolation keep eroding.

The load-bearing distinction: the indictment is not "the lines are worthless, don't use them." That overclaims past the evidence and weakens the structural argument. The defensible claim is the series' usual move — the line is not the problem; the line standing in for the floor is the problem. A real human answers it; it does real work at 3am. What it cannot do is substitute for embedded connection — and a system that funds the substitute while letting the floor erode has performed the laundering.

The metadata angle: the funding and visibility of crisis-response infrastructure, plotted against the decline of the connection-buffering institutions — the asymmetry between the resourced, reportable line and the unfunded, durable need. This is substitution-for-the-floor, not denigration of crisis services. It stays structural.
