Common Sense
Forty-odd times this site has shown the same shape. Raw power that could only ever be obeyed gets re-presented as something a reasonable person would freely accept. A taser becomes "compliance." A court declining to hear you becomes "leave denied." A narrowed ballot becomes "the will of the voters." Each file named the move in its own language. None of them named the machine the move runs on. This Edition names it, and it borrows the name from someone else. In nineteen seventy the French Marxist Louis Althusser drew a line that the rest of this archive has been walking ever since. It is the operating system under every case here, and "laundering," our word, is just the name for one thing that system does. This Edition is the index to the machine, and it is honest about how much of the machine it has not yet lit.
§01 · Two apparatuses
Althusser argued that a state keeps its order two ways at once.lens One set of institutions works by force and the threat of it: police, prisons, courts, the army. He called these the Repressive State Apparatus, the RSA, and the point about it is that everyone can see what it is. It works by making you obey, and it does not pretend otherwise. A second, much larger set works not by force but by belief: schools, the media, the family, churches, the party system, sport and the arts, and the law not as a courtroom but as a moral atmosphere you breathe without noticing. He called these the Ideological State Apparatuses, the ISAs, and the point about them is the opposite. They are built to look like the very absence of force. School feels like growing up. The news feels like finding out. Voting feels like choosing.
The division of labour is the whole design. The repressive apparatus holds the floor; the ideological apparatuses hold the ceiling; and the value of the ceiling is precisely that it does not look load-bearing. The RSA makes you obey. The ISAs make you agree, so that obedience feels like your own good sense and almost never has to be enforced. This is Althusser's claim, carried here as his, not handed down as proven. We use it because it is the cleanest available tool for the shape this archive keeps finding, and because once you have the two words, the cases sort themselves.
§02 · The launder is a translation
Here is where our word meets his. "Laundering," on this site, has always meant a conversion: a fact of force run through the vocabulary of consent until it reads as legitimate. Put Althusser's two apparatuses next to that and the conversion has a direction. The ideological apparatus takes an act of the repressive one, a beating, a denial, a closed door, and translates it out of the language of force and into the language of procedure, fairness, choice. The drive-stun is logged as "pain compliance." The refusal to hear is filed as "leave denied without reasons." The narrowed field is reported as "the result." Each translation is a launder. By the time the event is common knowledge, the force in it has been dressed as something a reasonable person consented to, and procedure reads as fairness because the ideological apparatus has spent a lifetime making procedure feel like fairness.
That is the third column of the map below, and it is the same column every time. The institutions in the first column are real and often do necessary things. Courts adjudicate; the press informs; schools teach. The launder is not their existence. It is the moment force is converted into the appearance of freely given consent, and the conversion is invisible precisely because it is done in institutions we are taught to read as neutral.
§03 · The map
Lay the whole archive on Althusser's list and it becomes one diagram. Each row is an apparatus he named; the third column is the launder it performs; the fourth points to the file on this site that caught it at work, or marks the corner we have not lit.

Two things the map is careful to do. It points every concrete instance at a case already built and already sourced elsewhere on this site, so the Edition adds no new claim about the world; it only draws the lines between Althusser's theory and our own filed evidence. And it shows its blanks. Education and the family are, on Althusser's account, the strongest apparatuses of all, the ones that form a subject before the subject can argue back, and they are the two this site has barely touched. The honest version of a capstone is not "we covered the machine." It is "here is the machine, here is the part we have mapped, and here is how much is still dark."
§04 · Hey, you there
Althusser's hardest claim is not about institutions at all. It is about you. He argued that ideology does not mainly work by making you afraid; it works by making you a certain kind of person, one for whom the existing arrangement is simply how things are.lens He called the mechanism interpellation, and he gave it a scene. A voice in the street calls "hey, you there," and you turn around, and in the act of turning, of recognising that the call was meant for you, you become the subject it addressed. You experience this as being a free individual who simply happened to respond. That feeling, Althusser said, is not the absence of ideology. It is ideology working at full strength. The subject who is most sure the thought is entirely his own is the subject the apparatus has formed most completely.
This is the part that is easy to turn into an insult, and we will not. The claim is not that people are stupid, or asleep, or sheep. Interpellation is a structure, not a measure of intelligence, and a clever person is hailed exactly as a foolish one is. The claim is narrower and stranger: that the terms in which you weigh a thing, what counts as reasonable, normal, common sense, were shaped upstream by institutions built to make some conclusions feel obvious. You can know that and weigh it anyway. But you cannot stand outside it, and neither can we, which is the next section.
§05 · So everyone but you is brainwashed?
This is the objection that sinks most writing of this kind, so it goes at the front of the room. If ideology hails everyone and turns them into obedient subjects, then the writer making the argument must be the one person who sees clearly, standing outside the machine, looking down at the dupes inside it. That is insulting, it is almost certainly false, and Althusser's own critics pressed exactly this point. A theory in which structures fully script people, they argued, leaves no room for anyone to notice, object, or change anything, including the theorist; it is too tidy, it explains everything and therefore predicts nothing.critique We grant the objection completely.
So here is the version this Edition actually holds, and it is smaller. The apparatus is real but it is not total. Interpellation can misfire: the voice calls "hey, you there," and sometimes you do not turn around. Althusser himself wrote that the ideological apparatus is not only how the order is reproduced but the very site where it is fought over, which means it can be contested, lost, and turned.lens The proof is unglamorous, and it is this page. A site built out of the communications apparatus, hailing you as crew rather than cargo, is itself an attempt to interpellate a different subject, and it can fail with you the same way the official version can. Nobody here is outside the machine.
The claim is not "you are a dupe and we are awake." It is "you are being hailed right now, by us included, and you are allowed to turn the other way."
§06 · What this is not, and what we never lit
The series audits its own instinct here, the way it does in Case 23 · The Ratchet.
It is not a claim that anyone is a dupe. Interpellation is a structure, not a verdict on intelligence, and treating the public as fools is itself an ideological move, the one this Edition most has to avoid.
It is not a conspiracy, and the framework makes that point for us. Althusser's apparatuses are relatively autonomous. There is no central editor coordinating schools, courts and the news; they reproduce the same order without a meeting, which is exactly why the pattern is so durable and so hard to fix. Different institutions reaching the same convenient common sense is a pattern, not a plot.
It is not a verdict that Althusser is correct, or that Marxism is true. The RSA and ISA split is one lens, named and attributed, chosen because it is the sharpest tool for the shape this archive keeps finding. It sits beside other lenses this work uses, and it has a complement: where this Edition names which institutions mould a subject, the death-anxiety reading names why the moulding holds.
And it is not "it is all propaganda." The whole value of Althusser's line is the line itself. The force is real and the institutions do real and often necessary things; the launder is the conversion of force into the appearance of consent, not the existence of the school, the court, or the paper. Collapsing everything into "it is all marketing" is the exact trapdoor The Brand was built to refuse, and it is refused again here.

- critique The framework is contested, and the Edition carries the objection on the page (§05). Critics including E. P. Thompson and Jacques Rancière argued that it is functionalist (it explains everything and so predicts nothing) and that it leaves no room for agency or resistance. Althusser's own counter, used here to hold the non-determinist reading, is that the ideological apparatus is "not only the stake but also the site of class struggle."
